Wasn’t it amazing how Mater Dei Parish found its home? Imagine the journey. For sixteen years Mater Dei Parish in Chula Vista served its community in borrowed spaces. Parishioners gathered in homes then a high school cafeteria. Two high school gyms also hosted their services. For thirteen years their own pastoral center served as their church. Finally in 2004 Bishop Robert H Brom established Mater Dei Parish. The community’s desire for a permanent home was strong. They dreamed of a place to share together. Their dedication led to the construction of a magnificent new church. The groundbreaking was a momentous occasion. Bishop Robert W McElroy and Bishop Emeritus Robert H Brom participated. About 1000 people celebrated this milestone. They used eight gold shovels to break ground. The new church boasts stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Point Loma and the San Diego skyline are also visible. The 17420 square foot building seats 1000 to 1200 people. Father Jovencio Ricafort the founding pastor envisioned a modern design. There are no doors separating the vestibule from the church. There are no pillars or partitions interrupting the view. The design subtly evokes the motherhood of Mary the patron saint. Mater Dei means Mother of God in Latin. A black and gray mosaic surrounds the crucifix in the sanctuary. A subtle curvature on the Blessed Sacrament chapel wall evokes a pregnant woman’s profile. An artistic depiction of Mary welcomes visitors. People representing the parish’s diverse ethnic groups are wrapped in her mantle. The 44 foot high 21 foot wide steel cross is a replica of a smaller wooden cross. Father Ricafort originally placed that cross on the future church site. This new cross stands as a testament to their journey. The parish persevered despite delays due to the pandemic inclement weather and construction setbacks. The dedication was postponed several times. Finally on July 25th Bishop McElroy dedicated the new church. For those early members like Elenita Johnston and others it was a dream realized. Their sacrifices and prayers were answered. It’s more than a building it’s a symbol of faith resilience and community. For Mater Dei Parish this new church is a legacy for future generations. It represents the culmination of years of dedication and a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. The beautiful Mater Dei Parish now stands as a beacon in Chula Vista. Let’s take a moment to appreciate its architectural beauty and the story of its creation.
