Mater Dei Catholic’s story began sixty years ago. Bishop Charles F. Buddy founded Marian High School. It was the first co-ed Catholic high school in San Diego. The campus started small. Emma and Robert Egger donated the land. Their gift created a culture of giving. Students learned to love and serve God. They did this both on and off campus. In 1992, Marian High School became Marian Catholic High School.
In 2007, Mater Dei Catholic High School opened. It stood on a 48-acre campus. By 2021, Mater Dei Catholic was huge. It became the largest TK-12th grade Catholic school in San Diego. It was also the second largest private school.
A big change happened in 1995. Estelle Kassebaum became the principal. People knew her as Dr. K. She wanted to re-energize the school. She planned for a new campus in East Chula Vista.
The school was renamed Mater Dei Catholic High School. This elevated “Marian” to “Mother of God.” The Crusader mascot remained. The school spirit stayed strong. The traditions lived on.
Mater Dei Catholic High School has many facilities. There is the Marian chapel. There is also a track and football stadium. Baseball and softball diamonds are available. The school also features tennis courts. A theater seats 800 people. There is a competition swimming pool. A basketball and volleyball gym is on site. Mater Dei Catholic even has an environmentally friendly “earth bench”.
Mater Dei Catholic High School is known for academics. The school offers advanced placement courses. It also provides honors courses. Students can explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. This happens through internships. The Aquinas Center supports students. It helps those with learning differences. The Language Academy aids English language development. Theology courses are offered for all grade levels.
