Consider Mata Sundari a beacon of guidance. This sacred place stands as a tribute to Mata Sundri the wife of Guru Gobind Singh. She played a vital role in Sikh history.

Gurdwara Mata Sundri is one of Delhi’s major historical Gurudwaras. It is located on Mata Sundri road. The Gurdwara stands behind JP Nayak Hospital. It marks the site of Mata Sundri’s Haveli. She stayed here after Guru Gobind Singh left for the Deccan.

Some believe that the Sangat raised a shrine. This loving memory marks where she lived for half her life. Many Sikhs believe she guided the Khalsa. This guidance lasted for forty years after Guru’s death in 1708. Sikhs respected her. They looked to her for guidance. Mata Sundri Kaur died here in 1747. Her last rites were performed at Gurdwara Bala Sahib.

Mata Sundri was the daughter of Bhai Ram Saran. He was a Kumarav Khatri of Bijvara. Bijvara is in present-day Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. She was also known as Mata Jito. As a child she was beautiful. Her parents named her Sundri because of her looks. Her father knew Guru Tegh Bahadur. It was decided she would marry Guru Gobind Singh. The wedding took place at Anandpur on April 4 1684.

Guru Gobind Singh went to Deccan from Talwandi Sabo. He asked Mata Sundri to stay in Delhi. At first she stayed at Bhai Jawahar Singh’s Haveli. After Guru Gobind Singh died Mata Sundri guided the Sikh Sangat. This is evident from written orders issued with her seal. These orders were given between 1717 and 1730.

From 1727 she stayed in a newly built building. It was called Mata Sundri’s Haveli. It is now called Gurdwara Sri Mata Sundri Delhi.

The Delhi Gurdwara Committee built an imposing shrine. It stands on the site of the Haveli where Mata Sundri stayed. Guru Gobind Singh gifted some of his weapons to Mata Sundri. They are now displayed at the Gurdwara.

The temple is built with brick and lime mortar. At the hall’s end is a marble gallery. The carved wood beam has an inscription in Gurmukhi. A marble slab sits in the center. It is surrounded by the Sikh emblem. The Gurdwara features a square-domed sanctum. Arched copings and a traditional entrance characterize the religious structure. This place reflects Mata Sundri’s enduring legacy. Her wisdom and guidance continue to inspire.
