Nestled beside the Long Island Expressway in Maspeth, Queens, stands Maspeth High School. A beacon of learning and ambition. Did you know its journey began not here, but miles away in Forest Hills? In September 2013, Maspeth High School opened its doors at the Metropolitan Avenue Campus with a mere 273 students. Just a year later, the school moved to its current home, a brand new building on 74th Street. Maspeth High School isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community. Currently, over 1,209 students from grades 9-12 fill its halls. They participate in over 40 clubs and compete on 27 varsity sports teams as the Maspeth Argonauts. Imagine the roar of the crowd as they cheer on their teams. Maspeth High School’s founding principal, Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir, envisioned a classical education model where knowledge intertwines and flourishes. His proposal, accepted in January 2011, laid the foundation for a school where every student is expected to graduate with an Arts Endorsed, Advanced Regents diploma within four years. The goal? To prepare them for the best four-year colleges and universities. However, not all has been smooth sailing for Maspeth High School. Controversy arose in 2021 with allegations of grade fraud against Abdul-Mutakabbir, leading to his removal and a subsequent settlement. The school has also faced challenges regarding its admissions process, sparking concerns and calls for greater transparency. Despite these hurdles, Maspeth High School remains committed to its mission. It strives to provide a quality education, fostering a dynamic learning environment where students can thrive. Maspeth High School is more than just a school. It’s a testament to the power of vision, the resilience of community, and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge.
