The Houghton Muslim Association established Masjid ul Furqaan in the mid-1990s. Originally nestled in a house on 2nd Avenue it quickly outgrew its humble beginnings. The current structure reflects the community’s growth and ambition. It stands as a symbol of their dedication to Islamic faith and education.
Imagine the dedication of the elders who laid the foundation for Masjid ul Furqaan in 2011. Their sacrifices built not just walls but a foundation for generations to come. The Masjid’s architecture is simple yet elegant. Natural light floods the interior creating a serene atmosphere perfect for prayer and reflection. The planned central water feature was deemed a safety hazard for children so it was wisely omitted.
The official opening was a joyous occasion. Beautiful renditions of Urdu Nazm and Quranic recitations filled the air. Moulana Sulaiman Ravat’s address highlighted the crucial role of Muslim women as facilitators of faith within their homes. He emphasized the importance of striving for success in this life while prioritizing the hereafter. This message resonated deeply especially as the opening coincided with Laylatul-Baraat the Night of Emancipation a night of spiritual significance.
Women toured the facilities marveling at the well-designed prayer area and classrooms dedicated to Islamic education. These facilities meet the educational needs of the growing Muslim community in Johannesburg. There were concerns about the lack of adequate facilities for women to fully participate in congregational prayers. However the Imam acknowledged this and it is under consideration. It reflects the ongoing effort to make the mosque fully inclusive.
The Houghton Muslim Association also oversees the Madrasatul Furqaan an Islamic academic institution. It serves the broader Gauteng Muslim community. The association’s commitment to education goes further with the Houghton Muslim Academy a self-funding institution dedicated to higher learning. Masjid ul Furqaan is 90% complete. While a few minor issues remain it already serves as a beacon of enlightenment for the Muslim community and beyond. It’s a place of worship learning and community.
