Have you ever heard of a mosque built as a symbol of gratitude? Right here stands Masjid Ubudiah, a stunning testament to the power of thankfulness. Masjid Ubudiah is nestled in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia. Its gleaming golden dome and four towering minarets pierce the sky, a beacon of faith and architectural marvel. Masjid Ubudiah’s story begins with Sultan Idris Shah I. He vowed to build this magnificent mosque if he recovered from a lingering illness. The year was 1913 when construction began, overseen by the same architect who designed the iconic railway stations of Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, Arthur Benison Hubback. The journey wasn’t without its bumps. Legend has it that two royal elephants, engaged in a spirited tussle, trampled some of the imported Italian marble tiles, delaying the project. World War I further hampered progress. Yet, Masjid Ubudiah was finally completed in 1917. Sadly, Sultan Idris Shah I didn’t live to see its completion. His successor, Sultan Abdul Jalil, officially opened the mosque. The mosque’s design is a blend of Indo-Saracenic Revival style. The central golden dome and four minarets create a symmetrical elegance. Bands of Italian marble accent the pristine white structure, a testament to the sultan’s original vision. Masjid Ubudiah stands today as a symbol of pride for the people of Perak, a place where history, architecture, and faith intertwine.
