Established in 1996 Masjid AQSA-SALAM stands as a testament to resilience. It’s more than just a mosque. It’s a vibrant community hub. Born from the merger of two Harlem mosques AQSA and SALAM it serves as the heart of the oldest Muslim community founded by African descendants in New York.

For almost three decades Masjid AQSA-SALAM has been a beacon. It brought together diverse Muslim communities primarily of West African descent. It became a vital center in Harlem. Especially in the area known as Little Africa. This is a neighborhood around West 116th Street.

More than just a place of prayer Masjid AQSA-SALAM served as a community center. It provided essential services. It fostered a sense of belonging for many immigrants. They found guidance. They received support. It helped them navigate life in America.

The mosque’s impact extends beyond its immediate community. It has been instrumental in the growth of other mosques. These are primarily in Harlem and the Bronx. The mosque has also played a major role in establishing various organizations. Examples include the Council of African Imams and the Harlem Islamic Leadership.

Masjid AQSA-SALAM wasn’t always located at its current address. In 2013 it faced displacement due to gentrification. This led to a temporary relocation. The First Corinthian Baptist Church offered space. The Friday prayers continued uninterrupted.

In May 2014 Masjid AQSA-SALAM found a new home at 23 East 115th Street. However this location has had its challenges. Rent increased significantly over the years. Despite these obstacles the community persevered.

The Masjid continues to thrive. It offers services in multiple languages including English French Arabic and African languages. This diversity is a reflection of its congregation. Members come from across New York City and even New Jersey. The mosque proudly embraces its multicultural identity. It acts as a bridge between the African Muslim immigrant community and the city. It facilitates communication with various officials and organizations.

Imam Konate Souleymane has been a driving force. He champions interfaith dialogue. He promotes understanding. The community has received widespread recognition for its moderate approach. This is especially significant in a post-9/11 world. Its message is one of peace. Its actions showcase tolerance.

Masjid AQSA-SALAM is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to faith community and perseverance. It is a living example of the enduring spirit of Harlem. It’s a place of worship a center of community and a symbol of hope. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness of diversity within New York City.
