In 1992, a small Muslim community began to dream of a place of worship in Ridgeway, Johannesburg. They envisioned Masjid Quba Ridgeway, a beacon of faith and community. Their journey, however, was far from easy. Masjid Quba Ridgeway’s story is one of perseverance against prejudice. The community faced strong opposition from two influential neighbors who challenged their right to build. These objectors used their positions and influence to create obstacles at every turn. One neighbor complained about the mosque’s lights and the sounds of prayers, while the other used his government position to intimidate supporters. The Muslim community, however, remained steadfast in their faith. They organized marches, distributed pamphlets, and sought legal counsel. They found allies in individuals like Boeta Rajah, Attorneys Zahir Omar, Advocate Feroze Boda, and Dockrat Attorneys. These supporters helped them navigate the complex legal battles and fight for their religious freedom. Despite setbacks and the hateful actions of a few, the community at Masjid Quba Ridgeway never gave up. Their persistence paid off. After years of struggle, they finally received approval to build in 2003. Construction began in 2006, with the design inspired by the al-Masjidun Nabawi in Medina. Masjid Quba Ridgeway officially opened its doors in 2008, a testament to the community’s unwavering faith and determination. Today, Masjid Quba Ridgeway stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the pursuit of faith and community can prevail. It offers prayer facilities, restrooms, parking, and accommodations for women and wheelchair users. It stands as a testament to the power of faith and community in overcoming adversity.
