Masjid Nurul Ikhlas began modestly. It served the growing Muslim workforce in the Batamindo Industrial Park. This industrial park resulted from collaboration between Indonesia and Singapore.

Imagine the year is 1991. BJ Habibie, a key figure in Indonesia’s technological advancement, inaugurated Masjid Nurul Ikhlas. He was then Minister of Research and Technology. He also headed the Batam Authority. His involvement highlights the mosque’s significance. It was more than just a place of worship. It was a symbol of progress and faith intertwined.

Initially, Masjid Nurul Ikhlas was small. It could only accommodate about 40 rows of worshippers. The structure was around 20 square meters. Granite was a key building material. As the community grew, so did the mosque. Recognizing the increasing number of worshippers, expansions were undertaken. Today, Masjid Nurul Ikhlas can welcome up to 3,000 people.

Back then all Muslim employees in the Batamindo Industrial area came here to pray. The Batamindo Industrial Park was the first, and one of the largest, industrial areas in Batam.

The establishment of Masjid Nurul Ikhlas coincided with another significant project. That was the construction of the Sei Beduk Reservoir. It ensured a water supply for the industrial area. Habibie also oversaw this project. This detail emphasizes the comprehensive planning behind Batam’s development. Both faith and infrastructure were being built together.

Masjid Nurul Islam, originally the only place of worship in the area, thrived with activities and Islamic studies every weekend. Later, activities and work programs developed rapidly, leading to the formation of the Nurul Islam Group.

Adding to the mosque’s unique charm are the sakura trees planted around it. These trees bloom beautifully. They coincide with Japan’s sakura season. This provides a stunning visual contrast. The delicate blossoms stand against the industrial landscape.
