“Imagine this,” I say, gesturing towards the unassuming yet historically rich Masjid lama Al-Hidayah. This old mosque holds a special place in the hearts of the Taman Melawati community. It represents a transition from the old to the new.
Masjid lama Al-Hidayah first opened its doors in 1981. It served as the primary place of worship for the growing community. As Taman Melawati developed, the need for a larger and more modern mosque became apparent.
In May 2011, the new Masjid Al-Hidayah was completed. It stands on Jalan Melawati 5 and Jalan Melawati 6. This new mosque replaced the older Masjid lama Al-Hidayah. The old mosque is located on Jalan B6 nearby.
The new Masjid Al-Hidayah officially launched on December 7, 2012. The Sultan of Selangor officiated the launch during his 67th birthday celebration. Around 3,000 people attended the grand event.
The newer Masjid Al-Hidayah sits on 4.5 acres of land. It is near the Malaysia National Zoo and Finas Complex. The Middle Ring Road 2 is only 500 meters away.
Before the mosque, the land was a football field. Locals used it for recreational activities. Planning for the mosque began in 2006. Taman Melawati was rapidly developing. There was no mosque to serve the estimated 60,000 residents. About 80 percent of them were Muslims.
The construction of the new Masjid Al-Hidayah happened in three phases. Phase one included the main mosque building. This building features a prayer hall. Phase two involved constructing a multipurpose hall and kiosks. Phase three included imam and bilal quarters, accommodations, and a kindergarten.
The first phase cost RM9 million. It was completed in November 2009. The two-story building can accommodate 4,500 people. It includes a prayer hall and management offices. There are also meeting rooms, a library, and a mortuary. Additional prayer spaces, storage rooms, bathrooms and toilet facilities are available. The mosque also offers facilities for marriage ceremonies.
Masjid lama Al-Hidayah may no longer be the main mosque. However, it remains a cherished landmark. It serves as a reminder of the community’s early days. The new Masjid Al-Hidayah continues the legacy. It provides a modern and spacious place for worship. It also supports the growing needs of Taman Melawati residents.
Today, both mosques play vital roles. They foster community and faith in Taman Melawati. Masjid lama Al-Hidayah reminds us of the past. The new Masjid Al-Hidayah looks towards the future.
