“Lost your keys, have you?” a voice chuckled, snapping me back to reality. I blinked, momentarily disoriented. The source of the voice, an old man with eyes as bright as the midday sun, chuckled again seeing my bewildered expression. Right, I wasn’t lost in some alleyway searching for my keys. I was standing in front of the Masjid La Ferraille. The Masjid La Ferraille is more than just a mosque. It’s a historical monument and an integral part of Fes el-Jdid, the royal city built by the Marinid dynasty in the 13th century. The mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It reflects the architectural prowess of that era and a symbol of their vision. The mosque’s construction began in 1276 under the rule of Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub. It was to serve the newly established city alongside three other prominent mosques in Fes. The mosque was designed with the classic “T-plan” layout. It features a vast hypostyle prayer hall and a large rectangular courtyard. The main entrance to the Masjid La Ferraille faces north, directly aligned with the mihrab at the southern end. Interestingly, it once had a double gate system like the Qarawiyyin Mosque. It is believed that one gate facilitated a water channel, possibly for ablutions, while the other served as the regular entrance. Another intriguing feature of the Masjid La Ferraille is that its minaret, a towering structure in the northwestern corner, is intricately adorned with a specific design. This design, known as the darj wa ktaf motif, isn’t just a random adornment. It consists of rhombus-like patterns carved into the brick, a distinct characteristic of Moroccan architecture. Over the centuries, the Masjid La Ferraille hasn’t remained untouched by time. It has undergone several restorations and additions, each leaving its mark on the mosque’s story. Even some of the vibrant decorations you see today, particularly the intricate stucco work, might be from the later Alawi period. The Masjid La Ferraille holds within its walls the whispers of centuries. It stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural legacy of Fes, inviting you to delve into its story and appreciate the intricate details woven into its being.
