“Did you hear about the mosque that disappeared?” The Masjid Koh Roka might sound like a riddle wrapped in an enigma. But its story is very real, closely tied with the tumultuous past of Cambodia’s Muslim community. The Masjid Koh Roka isn’t a grand, centuries-old structure. In fact, its story is more about absence than presence. You see, during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, mosques across Cambodia, including many along this very river, faced severe persecution. Many were destroyed or repurposed, their existence erased from memory. The very act of practicing Islam was driven underground. So, while we may not have the Masjid Koh Roka standing before us, its story is a poignant reminder of resilience and a testament to the enduring spirit of faith even in the face of adversity.
