Where does the name “Putat” come from? This, my friends, is Masjid Kampong Putat, and its name is rooted in a tale of adventure and nature. Legend has it that a resident of Kampong Ayer, while on a quest for timber in the nearby forests, lost his way. Days turned into nights as he wandered, seeking a way out of the dense woodland. Eventually, he sought shelter under a prominent tree. When worried villagers set out to find him, they discovered him safe but disoriented, resting beneath the very same tree – a Putat (Barringtonia asiatica) tree. From that day forward, this area became known as Kampong Putat, forever linked to the tale of the lost woodsman. But Masjid Kampong Putat itself is a beacon of faith, a testament to the resilience of this community. The first mosque, a symbol of devotion, rose on this ground on April 6th, 1982, and was inaugurated on February 28th, 1983. Over time, as the village thrived and grew, a new chapter unfolded. In 2009, a larger, even grander mosque was erected upon the foundation of the original, its doors open to welcome up to 700 worshippers. Masjid Kampong Putat isn’t just a place of prayer. It’s the heart of Kampong Putat, throbbing with life and activity. Within its walls, the community gathers for religious teachings, workshops, and those moments of shared reflection that bind a village together. The spirit of unity, evident in the very construction of the original mosque by the villagers themselves, continues to resonate within Masjid Kampong Putat’s walls, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and community.
