Ever wondered how a village gets its name? Here at Masjid Kampong Belimbing, we are about to uncover a tale of a unique tree and a close-knit community. The Masjid Kampong Belimbing is more than just a place of worship. It is a symbol of the village it serves.
Kampong Belimbing translates to Belimbing village. Belimbing is a large tree. This tree bears a light brown fruit similar to a tampoi fruit. The fruit’s shape resembles a belimbing buluh. It has a twisted form. The story goes that long ago, only one such tree grew in this village. The villagers decided to name their home after this unique tree.
Kampong Belimbing is located in Mukim Kota Batu. It is about 5.5 kilometers from Bandar Seri Begawan. You can reach it via Jalan Subok and Jalan Kebangsaan/Sungai Akar. The village is bordered by several other kampongs. These include Kampong Sungai Akar, Kampong Sungai Belukut, and Kampong Subok.
The village thrives with a motto. It says: “Hidup berkampung, bermasyarakat, bernegara, pupuk muafakat membawa berkat, hidup sejahtera”. This means: “Life as a village, a community, a nation, the fertilizer of consensus brings blessings, a prosperous life”. The village envisions joyful families, excellent communities, and distinguished villages. Their mission is to always be ready to face various challenges towards the perfection of society. “Maju Kampungku, Kampung Belimbing” is their village anthem.
Like other villages in Brunei, Kampong Belimbing has essential facilities. These include mosques like this Masjid Kampong Belimbing, roads, and utilities.
For recreation, you can visit Bukit Markuching Recreational Park on Jalan Subok. In the past, people crossed Bukit Markuching to reach Berakas or Bandar. The journey was long. They brought food and snacks. Wild cats were drawn by leftovers. The hill became known as Bukit Markuching. Kuching means cat.
Another recreational spot is Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park. It features a lake, wooden walkways, and shaded huts. It connects to Tasek Lama Recreational Park via a hiking trail. Tasik Sarubing was inaugurated in 2011. It covers 15 acres and has a 450-meter jogging path. You can even jog from Bukit Markucing Recreation Park to Tasik Sarubing Recreation Park. The round trip is about seven kilometers.
