Journey back to the late 1880s. Imagine a small cluster of Malay villages, known collectively as Kampung Baru, nestled within the burgeoning city of Kuala Lumpur. At its heart, on land generously donated by Haji Bachik bin Abdullah, a prominent merchant and community leader, rose a modest surau, built with the collective effort of the villagers. This humble structure, fashioned from nibong wood and palm leaves, marked the genesis of what would become the revered Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru. Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru quickly became the spiritual anchor of the community. Over time, the original structure was rebuilt three times to accommodate the growing congregation. The third incarnation, a charming building reminiscent of traditional Melaka houses, was funded through a unique community initiative. Every family contributed RM60, payable in installments, demonstrating their dedication to their faith and the Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru. By 1955, this grassroots effort had amassed RM30,000. To expedite the construction, a new committee intensified fundraising efforts. The Selangor State Government contributed a substantial RM90,000, ensuring the completion of the Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru. The foundation stone was laid in 1956 by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, further solidifying the mosque’s significance. Today, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru stands as a testament to the community’s unwavering spirit. It welcomes over 7,000 worshippers every Friday and at least 500 for daily prayers. The mosque has evolved into more than a place of worship. Itβs a vibrant hub, hosting lectures every evening after Maghrib and morning lectures from Subuh until 7:00 a.m. This tradition began in the 1960s, led by esteemed teachers like Anuar Mussadad and Kiai Fathullah Harun. The mosque’s grounds, once a burial site for the early villagers, now encompass a modern complex. The building spans 6,472 square meters, featuring separate prayer halls for men and women, administrative offices, meeting rooms, guest rooms, and even a kindergarten. Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru embodies the resilience and devotion of the Kampung Baru community. It serves as a bridge between the past and the present, a place where history intertwines with faith.
