Beneath the tropical sun of Batam, Masjid Darusalam stands as more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the dedication and vision of a community. Masjid Darusalam’s story began humbly, in the heart of the Mukakuning Indah 1 housing complex. Around 1996, the faithful who gathered for prayers started dreaming of a brighter future for their children. They envisioned an Islamic education that went beyond what was available at the time. These dedicated individuals, mostly employees in Batam’s burgeoning industries, pooled their resources. Their first initiative, a playgroup and kindergarten (Taman Kanak-Kanak or Raudhatul Athfal), began modestly in a private home. When Masjid Darusalam was finally built, it became the new home for these fledgling classes. The main prayer hall transformed into a classroom, and the courtyard became a playground. To formalize their efforts, the Darussalam Foundation was officially established on March 24, 1997. This marked a pivotal moment for Masjid Darusalam and its growing educational mission. The community’s needs continued to evolve. As more families with school-aged children settled in the area, the Foundation members began discussing the establishment of an Islamic elementary school (SDIT). These discussions often took place during Yasinan gatherings, hosted in the homes of foundation members. Finally, on October 24, 2002, SDIT Darussalam opened its doors. Initially sharing space with the existing kindergarten, playgroup, and religious classes at Masjid Darusalam, the school quickly outgrew its initial location. Just a year later, SDIT Darussalam relocated to Taman Jaya Asri Housing, after receiving land from the Batam Authority. Masjid Darusalam’s influence continued to spread. The Foundation took over the management of SD Al Muhtadin Plus in Batu Aji, Kapling Lama. In 2008, an Islamic junior high school (SMPIT) opened, followed by an Islamic vocational school (SMK) in 2015. Masjid Darusalam stands as a symbol of community spirit, a beacon of education, and a place where faith and learning intertwine. It’s a reminder that from humble beginnings, great things can blossom.
