Beneath the vibrant Ghanaian sky, Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman stands as a testament to faith and community. Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman isn’t just a building. It’s a story woven into the fabric of Accra. It began with a man named Mallam Musah Dramani Daru. He dreamed of building a mosque on his land in Abeka-Lapaz. Sadly, illness claimed his life before his dream could be realized. But his children, honoring his wish, gifted the land to the community.

The dream was revived by Mallam Tanko Jibrilla Musa, with the help of Alhaji Shafiu Aguda, Mallam Alhassan Mohamed, and Mallam Amidu Ali. Construction of Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman began in July 1999, supported by the Al-Noori Organization of Kuwait. Just six months later, the mosque was completed. It was officially inaugurated in May 2000 by Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osamanu Nuhu Sharubutu. Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman quickly became a vital hub. Muslims gathered for daily prayers and Jumuah prayers. Children learned the Quran and Islamic principles within its walls.

Over the years, the mosque’s congregation grew. It drew people from the Lapaz community and even foreign students. An executive committee was formed to manage the growing needs of Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman and oversee its expansion. The mosque also established sub-committees to address specific aspects of its operations. Originally called Bilal Mosque, it officially became Bilal Islamic Center in 2024. This reflects its broader role in the community. Today, Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman continues to serve as a place of worship, education, and community gathering. It stands as a living legacy to the dream of Mallam Musah Dramani Daru. Masjid Bilal – Akweteyman welcomes all who seek solace, knowledge, and connection within its embrace.
