Recall a woman of faith. It resonates through the very stones of Masjid Asma Bint Umays. This mosque is not just a place of worship. It stands as a tribute to a remarkable woman in Islamic history.
Masjid Asma Bint Umays is named for Asma bint Umais. She was a female disciple of the Prophet Muhammad. Her life is an inspiring story of devotion. It is a testament to her strength.
Asma had the unique honor of marrying three famous companions of the Prophet. These were Ja’far ibn Abi Talib, Abu Bakr, and Ali. Each marriage shaped her life. Each marriage added to her legacy.
Born around 597 to 600 CE in Mecca, Asma was the daughter of Umays ibn Ma’ad. Her mother was Hind bint Awf. Asma’s sisters also held important positions. Salma bint Umays was the wife of Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib. Two of Muhammad’s wives, Zaynab bint Khuzayma and Maymunah bint al-Harith, were her maternal half-sisters.
Asma converted to Islam early. This was between late 614 and early 616 CE. She and her sister Salma embraced the new faith. This was after the Messenger of Allah had entered the house of al-Arqam.
Her first marriage was to Ja’far ibn Abi Talib. In 616, they emigrated to Abyssinia. There, she gave birth to three sons: Abdullah, Muhammad, and Awn. Life in Abyssinia was difficult. Asma later spoke of the fear and harm she suffered there.
In 628, Asma and Ja’far returned to Medina. Ja’far fought at the Battle of Mu’tah. He was killed there. The Prophet Muhammad consoled Asma. He told her that God had given Ja’far two wings to fly in Paradise.
After Ja’far’s death, Asma married Abu Bakr. She gave birth to his son Muhammad in 632. Abu Bakr instructed Asma to wash his corpse after his death.
Following Abu Bakr’s death, Asma married Ali ibn Abu Talib. She bore him two more sons: Yahya and Awn. Asma played a role in raising Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr.
Asma narrated ahadith from Muhammad. She is considered one of the women of Paradise. Her wisdom and faith were admired by many.
One story tells of a dispute between her sons. Muhammad ibn Jafar and Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr argued about their fathers’ achievements. Ali asked Asma to judge between them. She wisely said, “I have never seen a young man better than Jafar. I have never seen an old man better than Abu Bakr.”
