Lost in the sands of time, Masjid As Zaham stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This mosque, nestled among the historic sites of Medina, played a significant role during the Battle of the Trench. Masjid As Zaham, along with six other mosques, was built on the locations where troops were stationed during this pivotal battle in 627 CE. While originally seven mosques marked these command posts, today only six remain. Yet, they are still known as the Seven Mosques (saba masajid). Masjid As Zaham, also known as Masjid Fatima al-Zahra, is the smallest of these mosques, measuring a mere 4 meters by 3 meters. It was constructed much later than the others, during the Ottoman era under the reign of Sultan Abdul Majid I. Imagine the scene centuries ago: the hurried digging of the trench, the tense anticipation of the approaching Quraish army, and the fervent prayers offered at these strategic points. Masjid As Zaham, though small, represents the unwavering spirit of the early Muslim community defending their city. Each of the Seven Mosques offers a glimpse into the past, but Masjid As Zaham, in its humble size, whispers a unique story of perseverance. It’s a reminder that even the smallest contributions can have a powerful impact on the course of history.
