“Tentera Diraja” means the King’s Army in Malay. The Masjid Angkatan Tentera traces its roots to the Muslims serving in the British Army before Singapore’s independence.

Hello everyone. Today we explore the Masjid Angkatan Tentera. It’s a place with a unique history. This mosque has stood since 1961.

The Masjid Angkatan Tentera sits atop Clementi Hill. Its gold-painted dome shines brightly. It is a single-story structure.

In 1961 the British Army built the mosque. It was for Muslim soldiers after World War II. People often mistakenly think the Malaysian government owns it. This is because of its name.

Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Yusof Ishak opened the Masjid Angkatan Tentera on March 30, 1962. He was the Head of State of Singapore then. Muslim servicemen formed a Guard of Honour contingent. They were present at the opening ceremony.

The British Army withdrew from Singapore in the late 1960s. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore then managed the mosque. It is also known as MUIS.

The Masjid Angkatan Tentera has a special program. It is called “Mudik ke Hulu”. This program helps ex-offenders. They can reintegrate into society. The program offers weekly classes and skill upgrades.

The mosque is accessible from Kent Ridge Bus Terminal. Bus services 33, 183, and 188 can take you there.

The Masjid Angkatan Tentera stands as a testament. It shows the history of Muslims in the military. Its hilltop location and golden dome make it iconic. It continues to serve the community today.
