Is it possible that the Imam of Medina is linked to this very place of worship? That’s what many believe about Masjid Anas Ibn Malik. Welcome to this significant mosque, a place resonating with history and reverence.

Masjid Anas Ibn Malik carries a name of immense importance. Malik ibn Anas was a prominent figure in Islamic jurisprudence. He was born around 715 and died in 795 in Medina. Malik ibn Anas spent most of his life right here in Medina. He became a leading scholar of Islamic law. He attracted many students. His followers became known as the Maliki school of law.

Malik’s prestige grew so much that he became involved in politics. During a rebellion, he declared that loyalty to the caliph wasn’t a religious necessity if homage was given under compulsion. The caliph won. Malik was flogged for his words. Ironically this punishment only increased his standing with the people. Later in life, he regained favor with the central government.

Malik ibn Anas wrote a major book called the Muwatta. It’s the oldest surviving compilation of Islamic law. The Muwatta aimed to give a survey of law and justice. It also covered religious rituals and practices. These were based on the consensus of Islam in Medina. It became a theoretical standard for unsettled matters. Al-Shafi’i called it the soundest book on earth after the Quran. This compilation earned Malik reverential titles. He became known as Shaykh of Islam and Proof of the Community. He was also called the Knowledgeable Scholar of Medina.

Islamic tradition says that Muhammad foretold Malik’s birth. Muhammad said people would seek knowledge. They would find no one more expert than the knowledgeable scholar of Medina. Malik is an exemplary figure in all traditional schools of Sunni thought. Al-Shafi’i, one of Malik’s most notable students, became the founder of another legal school. He said no one was as great a favor to him in religion as Malik.

Malik was a strict opponent of anthropomorphism. He deemed it absurd to compare God’s attributes with those of man. Malik was a proponent of intercession in personal supplication. When asked whether to face the Prophet’s tomb or the qibla during prayer, Malik advised facing the Prophet. He said the Prophet is a means to God. Malik was also a supporter of Tabarruk. This is seeking blessings through relics.

Malik detested disputing in religious matters. He believed it fostered self-display and hardened the heart. He also wrote that shaving the mustache is an innovation. Malik ibn Anas died in Medina in 795 CE. He was either 83 or 84 years old. He is buried in the Al-Baqi’ cemetery. His last words were the testification of faith.

As you stand here at Masjid Anas Ibn Malik reflect on the legacy of Imam Malik. His teachings continue to influence Islamic law and spirituality. Consider his dedication to the Prophet Muhammad. Think about his contributions to Islamic jurisprudence. This mosque stands as a testament to his enduring impact on Islam.
