What secrets does Masjid Al-Mubarak hold? Here in the heart of Karimun, Kepulauan Riau, stands Masjid Al-Mubarak. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the rich history of Islam in this region. Masjid Al-Mubarak whispers tales of centuries past, dating back to its construction in 1873. Imagine a time when this very spot was a bustling hub for traders from distant lands.

Masjid Al-Mubarak played a pivotal role in the spread of Islam throughout the Malay world. Built by Raja Abdullah bin Raja Ahmad Engku Tuah, grandson of the revered Raja Haji Fisabillilah, the mosque stands as a symbol of his lineage and devotion. The location itself holds historical significance. The first port on Karimun Island was located right in front of Masjid Al-Mubarak. This made it a central gathering point for merchants from Arabia, China, and India, who came seeking spices and, in turn, shared their faith and knowledge.

This makes Masjid Al-Mubarak the third oldest mosque in Kepulauan Riau. It follows Masjid Abdul Gani on Buru Island and another unnamed, even older mosque. The very bricks used to construct this grand mosque have a story to tell. Chinese craftsmen brought them from a factory in Kampung Sebranggana on Buru Island. These are the same bricks used to build Masjid Raja Haji Abdul Ghani, connecting the two mosques in a tangible way. The original structure of Masjid Al-Mubarak showcases a beautiful blend of architectural styles. While incorporating influences from various cultures, the design emphasizes traditional Malay mosque architecture.

Over time, Masjid Al-Mubarak has undergone several renovations to accommodate the growing community. The addition of a surrounding terrace in 2010 provides a welcoming space for reflection and gathering. Despite these changes, the main roof, or “bumbung,” retains its original design. This serves as a visual reminder of the mosque’s rich heritage. Today, Masjid Al-Mubarak continues to serve as a vital center for the community. It’s a place where people from all walks of life come together for daily prayers, Quranic studies for children, and a sense of connection to the past. The echoes of history resonate within these walls, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the interwoven stories of those who have prayed here over the centuries.
