A celestial stone rests within its walls. This is Masjid al-Haram the Grand Mosque of Mecca. It stands as a testament to faith. Its history stretches back centuries. It’s not just a building. It’s the heart of Islam.

For centuries the Kaaba stood in an open space. Worshippers gathered there. They prayed and performed rituals. The Kaaba was sacred. It was important to early followers of Prophet Muhammad. After Muhammad’s return to Mecca in 630 CE he ordered the destruction of idols. He cleansed the shrine of polytheistic associations.

The first Muslim structure was a simple wall. It was built around the Kaaba. Umar ibn al-Khattab the second caliph built it in 638 CE. Later caliphs added things. They added ceilings columns and decorations. Al-Mahdi an Abbasid caliph made major changes in the 8th century. He rebuilt and expanded the structure. He moved the outer walls. The Kaaba now stood in the center of a courtyard.

The mosque has been renovated repeatedly. It was damaged by fire and floods in the 14th century. It was renovated again in 1571. Sultan Selim II ordered architect Sinan to make improvements. Sinan replaced the flat roof with small domes. These Ottoman additions are some of the oldest parts of the structure.

In the 20th century the mosque was modernized. Electric lighting was added. An electric public address system came in 1948. Major changes happened later. Commercial air travel brought more pilgrims. Saudi Arabia’s oil wealth funded massive projects. King Saud began an expansion in 1955. It was finished in 1973. The area expanded enormously. Its capacity increased to 500000.

King Fahd began another expansion in 1984. Buildings were demolished to make room. A large paved area was created. Escalators tunnels and passageways eased congestion. Modern communications and air conditioning were added. The mosque’s size and capacity grew significantly.

In November 1979 militants seized the mosque. They held hostages. A bloody battle ensued. Government troops retook the mosque. This event shocked the Islamic world. Violence is strictly forbidden within the mosque.

Masjid al-Haram continues to evolve. It remains a symbol of faith. It’s a place of pilgrimage for millions. It’s the largest and most expensive mosque in the world. Its story reflects the history of Islam. It’s a place of profound spiritual significance.
