Deep within Petaling Jaya stands a beacon of faith. The Masjid Al-Islamiah. Its story is one of humble beginnings and unwavering community spirit.
Imagine it is 1986. A small surau is built. It is named Surau Al Islamiah. This small house of worship became the seed from which Masjid Al-Islamiah would grow.
Initially, the surau could accommodate only 600 people. Its structure was simple. Wood framed its walls. Cement formed its floors. Yet, its impact was significant.
Ustaz Hassan bin Harun was the first chairman. Tuan Haji Hamid bin Udin assisted him as secretary. Together, they guided the growing congregation.
As the community flourished, the surau became too small. In 1998, an expansion project began. Dato’ Seri Azhar bin Othman donated RM40,000. This contribution enabled the surau to expand. Tuan Haji Khairi bin Shamsuddin played a vital role in securing this donation.
In 1991, a pivotal moment arrived. The surau’s management sought to elevate its status. They applied to the Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor JAIS. They requested an upgrade from surau to masjid. The surrounding community needed a place for Friday prayers.
JAIS approved the request. Surau Al Islamiah was officially renamed Masjid Al-Islamiah. This marked a new chapter for the community.
With its new status, JAIS established a formal mosque committee. Tuan Haji Hassan Bin Mohd Salleh became the first Nazir. En Daud bin Yahya was appointed Imam 1. Tuan Haji Mat Seh bin Husin served as Imam 2. He also took on the role of Assistant Registrar of Marriages.
As the congregation grew, expansions continued. These expansions were funded by donations from worshippers and local representatives.
Eventually, the existing mosque became insufficient. A new, larger Masjid Al-Islamiah was needed. In December 2004, the community decided to build a new mosque.
The proposed site was Lot 1186. This land belonged to the Ministry of Education Malaysia. It was initially planned for a primary school. The land was located along Jalan PJS 6/4.
On July 15, 2005, a formal request was submitted to JAIS. In 2007, the land was officially designated for the Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor.
In early 2008, a groundbreaking ceremony took place. Dato’ Seri Mohd Khir bin Toyo officiated the event. The initial approved cost was RM6 million. After a change in Selangor’s state government, the budget was reduced to RM5.4 million. Construction began on April 7, 2010.
The new Masjid Al-Islamiah was completed in mid-May 2012. On July 20, 2012. This coincided with the first night of Ramadan. The new mosque opened its doors.
The Masjid Al-Islamiah could now accommodate the growing congregation. People came from Kampung Lindungan, Desa Mentari, and Bandar Sunway.
Since its opening, the mosque has thrived. Various activities have enriched the community. The five daily prayers remain the central focus.
Throughout the years, several individuals have served as Nazir. Tuan Hj Hassan Bin Mohd Salleh served from 1991 to 2006. En Yahya Bin Abdul Rahman followed from 2006 to 2009. Ustaz Zulkifli Bin Mohamad led from 2009 to 2018. Ustaz Hakiminhafiz Bin Husain has been in charge since 2019.
The Masjid Al-Islamiah stands as a testament to community spirit. It reflects a journey of growth. From a small surau to a prominent mosque. It is a symbol of faith.
