Journey back to the year 622 CE. Masjid Al Hidayah stands in Medina, a city once known as Yathrib. This city played a pivotal role in the early days of Islam. It became a sanctuary for Prophet Muhammad and his followers after their migration from Mecca. This journey, known as the Hijra, marked a turning point, establishing Medina as a vital center of Islamic faith and culture. Now, while the exact early history of Masjid Al Hidayah remains unknown, the broader history of Medina intertwines with it. Upon arriving in Medina, Prophet Muhammad established two significant mosques: Masjid al-Quba and Masjid an-Nabawi. Masjid an-Nabawi, also known as the Prophet’s Mosque, stands as a prominent landmark in Medina. Its construction involved a touching act of generosity. When the Prophet inquired about the land’s ownership, he discovered it belonged to two orphans. They offered the land as a gift, but he insisted on paying a fair price. A companion, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, stepped forward to cover the cost. This act underscores the Prophet’s emphasis on justice and respect for others’ rights. Over the centuries, Masjid an-Nabawi has undergone several expansions and renovations. From its humble beginnings, constructed with mud bricks and palm tree trunks, it has evolved into a magnificent structure. The mosque’s growth reflects the increasing number of Muslims and its enduring significance as a center of worship and pilgrimage. Medina itself has witnessed numerous rulers and empires. From Jewish-Arabian tribes to the Rashidun Caliphate, the Umayyads, Abbasids, Mamluks, Ottomans, and finally, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, each has left its mark on the city’s landscape. These shifts in power demonstrate Medina’s strategic location and its importance in the region’s history. Masjid Al Hidayah stands amidst this rich historical tapestry, a testament to the city’s enduring spiritual significance.
