“Millions flock here every year.” See Masjid Al-Haram standing proudly before us. It is Islam’s most sacred mosque. It is in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Right here, history whispers from every stone.

Masjid al-Haram’s story starts with Prophet Abraham. Islamic tradition says that Abraham built the Kaaba. The Kaaba is a cube-shaped structure. It is at the heart of Masjid al-Haram. Abraham built it following divine instructions. The Kaaba became the first mosque. It was dedicated to the worship of one God.

Look at the Black Stone. It is in the Kaaba’s eastern corner. Muslims believe it came from heaven. An angel gave it to Abraham. The Black Stone sanctifies the Kaaba. It is a focal point for Islamic rituals. Pilgrims touch or kiss the stone during circumambulation.

In 630 CE, Prophet Muhammad reclaimed Mecca. He cleansed the Kaaba of idols. He established monotheism. Masjid al-Haram became the heart of Islamic faith.

The Umayyad dynasty initiated major renovations. In 692 CE, Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan expanded the mosque. They raised the outer walls. They increased prayer spaces. Later, marble columns replaced wooden ones. A minaret was built under Caliph Al-Walid I.

During the Ottoman era, Sultan Selim II renovated Masjid al-Haram in 1570. Mimar Sinan led the efforts. Domes and intricate calligraphy were added. Natural disasters caused damage in the 17th century. Sultan Murad IV restored the mosque in 1629. A stone arcade was added. Three more minarets were constructed. Marble floors were retiled.

Under Saudi rule, expansions began in 1955. Four new minarets were added. Ceilings were refurbished. Artificial stone and marble floors were installed. The Masa gallery was integrated. King Fahd expanded the mosque further between 1982 and 2005. A new prayer wing was added via the King Fahd Gate. Outdoor prayer areas were created. Modern amenities improved the experience.

In 2008, King Abdullah announced the third major expansion. It aimed to increase the mosque’s capacity. Setbacks occurred. A crane collapse in 2015 caused casualties. Construction resumed in 2017. The Abraj Al Bait complex was completed in 2012. It features the Makkah Royal Clock Tower.

In 1979, extremist insurgents seized Masjid al-Haram. This tragic event underscored the mosque’s global significance. The COVID-19 pandemic brought new challenges. The mosque closed temporarily in 2020. Gradual resumption began later.

Masjid al-Haram is central to the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The Umrah can be done anytime. Pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba. They touch the Black Stone. They walk between Safa and Marwa.

Esteemed imams guide Masjid al-Haram. They lead prayers and deliver sermons. Abd ar-Rahman as-Sudais and Salih bin Abdullah al Humaid are prominent figures.

The Kaaba is the focal point for Muslim prayers worldwide. Maqam Ibrahim houses a rock with Abraham’s footprint. Pilgrims pause here to offer prayers. Safa and Marwa commemorate Hagar’s search for water. Pilgrims perform the sa’y ritual. The Zamzam Well is a miraculous water source. Pilgrims drink its water.

Adjacent is the Makkah Al Mukarramah Library. Some believe it is Prophet Muhammad’s birthplace. The King of Saudi Arabia is the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. This includes Masjid al-Haram.
