Did you know Masjid al Asyq was once the original qibla for Muslims? It is a profound detail that anchors this sacred space in the earliest chapters of Islam. Let’s explore the story of Masjid al Asyq.

Masjid al Asyq is nestled in the heart of Sham. This blessed land has witnessed countless prophets and messengers. Their stories echo through its very stones.

One extraordinary night Angel Jibril took Prophet Muhammad on al-Buraq from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa. Here at Masjid al Asyq, the Prophet led all assembled prophets in prayer. Then he ascended to the heavens to meet Allah. The Quran mentions this night. It mentions the names of Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Aqsa. This gives Masjid al Asyq deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide.

In 637, Umar Ibn Al Khattab opened Jerusalem to the Muslims. For 462 years they remained protecting religious freedom for minorities. This protection followed the Treaty of Umar. It followed the teachings of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad.

The city’s history became war-torn. The mosque became a center of struggle and resistance in Jerusalem. This continues today.

In the 1180s, Salahuddin al-Ayyubi united feuding Muslim states around Jerusalem. In 1187, the united Muslim army liberated the city from the Crusaders. Salahuddin did not allow a massacre of civilians or soldiers unlike the Crusaders 88 years before. He ordered the Crusaders out. He retook control of the Haram for the Muslims.

This act honored the symbols of Allah. It came from the piety of hearts. Remember as you stand here the connection to Al-Aqsa. Consider its place in Islamic history. Remember its legacy of peace and resilience.
