Masjid Al Aoufi may not be as grand as Masjid an-Nabawi. Yet, it offers a serene escape, a place for reflection. Medina itself is the second holiest city in Islam. This is where Prophet Muhammad found refuge. It became the center of the Muslim Empire.
Medina is known as Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. This means “The Luminous City”. Or Madinat Rasul Allah. That means “City of the Messenger of God”. Before Islam it was called Yathrib. Medina is where the Prophet Muhammad established the Muslim community after his flight from Mecca in 622 CE. His body is entombed here.
The city is approximately 445 kilometers from Mecca. It sits on a fertile oasis 625 meters above sea level. Medina is bounded by a lava field on the east. Arid hills enclose the other three sides.
The Prophet’s Mosque is in the city center. Muhammad helped build it. Non-Muslims cannot enter the sacred area. However, they can catch a glimpse from outside. Over time caliphs added to the mosque. Sultan Selim II decorated the interior with mosaics and gold. Sultan Mahmud II built the dome. In 1839 he painted it green. This became the accepted color of Islam.
Medina is home to the first mosque in Islam. That is Masjid Al-Quba. It was built by Prophet Muhammad upon his arrival in 622 CE. Medina has many significant mosques. These mosques hold special meaning for Muslims.
Medina has a population of over 1.5 million. Many pilgrims settle here. The city cultivates fruits, vegetables, and cereals. It is especially famous for dates. Medina produces over 300 varieties of dates.
Millions of Muslims visit Medina every year. They seek spiritual sanctuary. The Prophet said a prayer in his mosque is better than 1000 prayers elsewhere. Except for Masjid Al-Haram.
Medina is more than a city. It is a sanctuary. Angels guard it. The Prophet said, “O Allah! Bestow on Medina twice the blessings You bestowed on Mecca.”
