This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the community’s generosity and faith. The name “Al Ansar,” meaning “The Helpers,” honors those in Medina who aided Prophet Muhammad and the Muhajirin during their migration from Mecca. The two main tribes of the Ansar, the Bani Khazraj and Bani Aus, welcomed these newcomers, sharing their homes and resources. Masjid Al Ansar mirrors that compassion. It began in 1974 with a vision shared by community leaders. They saw the growing Muslim population in Bedok, many resettled from other areas, and recognized the need for a dedicated place of worship. The mosque became a reality under the Mosque Building Fund program. Construction started in 1977, culminating in the grand opening on June 14, 1981. The original structure, designed by HDB, featured a striking dome. This design, along with the mosque’s very existence, symbolized the unity and dedication of the community. Masjid Al Ansar has evolved over the years. Its facade was updated from green to blue in 2000, reflecting changing times. A major renovation in 2012 brought the mosque to its current state. The original minaret remains, a poignant link to its past, now repurposed as an elevator shaft. Masjid Al Ansar now boasts seven floors, including a basement car park. The mosque also has barrier-free access, ensuring inclusivity for all worshippers. It can now hold up to 4,500 people.
