Could a mosque hold the key to understanding the Quran through the Quran itself? Here at Masjid Al-Amin Al-Shanqeeti in Medina, that very question hangs in the air. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the life and work of a remarkable scholar, Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqeeti. Masjid Al-Amin Al-Shanqeeti stands as a tribute to the Mauritanian scholar who dedicated his life to unraveling the complexities of the Quran. Born in 1907 in the Shanqeet region of Mauritania, his path was intertwined with knowledge from a young age. Raised in a family of scholars, he memorized the Quran by the age of ten. He mastered the art of recitation and the intricacies of the Uthmani Mushaf. He delved into Arabic grammar, the Prophet’s life, and Arabian history, all before seeking knowledge from renowned scholars of his time. Al-Shanqeeti’s journey led him to Saudi Arabia in 1947. He made the pilgrimage to Mecca and then began teaching at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. His teachings resonated deeply with the community, and they pleaded with him to stay. It was here that he began working on his magnum opus, “Adwaa-ul-Bayaan fee Tafseer-il-Qur’an bil-Qur’an,” a commentary on the Quran using only the Quran itself. His understanding was so profound that he could recite any verse and then flawlessly quote the verses before and after. This mastery captivated his students, among them prominent figures like Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz Bin Bāz. Masjid Al-Amin Al-Shanqeeti isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of a scholar who believed in practicing what he preached. He forbade backbiting in his presence and valued truth and sincerity above all else. He embraced intellectual discourse and was always willing to reconsider his views if presented with compelling evidence. His legacy extends beyond the walls of this mosque, reminding us of the power of knowledge and dedication.
