Once known as Masjid Taman Sri Rampai, Masjid Abu Ubaidah Al Jarrah stands before you. This mosque began its journey on January 27, 1986. The Public Works Department of the Federal Territory initiated the construction. It completed on April 24, 1987. The project cost RM 2,125,625.00.
The rapid development of housing and shops around Taman Sri Rampai necessitated its construction. Before Masjid Abu Ubaidah Al Jarrah existed, the community gathered at Surau Taman Setapak Jaya and Surau Taman Sri Rampai for prayers. These smaller prayer spaces could only accommodate about 500 people at a time. Recognizing this limitation, Dato’ Md Daud bin Che Ngah and fellow residents spearheaded the effort to build a larger mosque.
Masjid Abu Ubaidah Al Jarrah now stands on a 3-acre site. This expansive area includes the mosque building itself. It also features a religious primary school and staff quarters. Through several renovations and improvements, the mosque has expanded its facilities. It now includes office space. There is also a funeral management room. A meeting hall is available. You’ll also find rooms for the imam and bilal. Even shop buildings enhance the mosque’s function. This makes it more than just a place of prayer.
Today, Masjid Abu Ubaidah Al Jarrah can accommodate approximately 2,500 worshippers at once. This provides ample space for the growing community. Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ismail officially inaugurated Masjid Abu Ubaidah Al-Jarrah. The inauguration took place on January 31, 1989. This corresponded to 23 Jamadil Akhir 1409H.
