How did one scholar’s pursuit of knowledge shape a nation? Here, at Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi, we find ourselves connected to the legacy of Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Nasser Al-Saadi. He was also known as al-Sa’di.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi stands as a testament to his enduring influence. Al-Sa’di was born in Unayzah in 1889. His early life was marked by the loss of his parents. Despite these hardships, he memorized the Quran by age eleven.

He pursued religious education and became a respected scholar. Al-Sa’di taught and authored over 40 books. These books covered diverse fields like tafsir and fiqh. His tafsir, Taysir al-Kareem al-Rahman, is highly regarded by Salafi scholars.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi connects us to Al-Sa’di professional life. He began teaching at 23. He dedicated himself to teaching, writing, and delivering fatawa. In 1935, he completed his eight-volume tafsir. It solidified his reputation as a leading scholar.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi reminds us of Al-Sa’di’s contributions beyond scholarship. In 1941, he established a public library in Unayzah. It was the first of its kind in the Najd region. Though offered the position of judge, al-Sa’di declined.

He became the imam and khateeb of Unayzah’s largest mosque in 1942. He held this role until his death in 1956.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi embodies Al-Sa’di’s embrace of technology. He introduced loudspeakers to Unayzah. He advocated using modern tools for spreading religious knowledge. He even wrote a book affirming the compatibility of science and Islam.

Al-Sa’di addressed contemporary issues. He wrote about the harms of smoking. He deemed organ transplantation permissible. Though trained in Hanbali fiqh, he sometimes adopted positions outside it.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi serves as a reminder of Al-Sa’di’s students. Many of his students became imams and judges. Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen was among his most famous students. Al-Sa’di appointed him to succeed him as teacher and khateeb.

Al-Sa’di’s influence extended beyond al-Qassim. He received letters seeking fatwas from across the Arabian Peninsula. His fatawa were compiled and published posthumously.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi stands as a tribute to Al-Sa’di’s written works. He authored over 40 works. His works include Taysir al-Kareem al-Rahman and Mukhtasir al-Usool al-Fiqh. Many of his works have been translated into English.

Al-Sa’di faced health challenges in his later years. King Sa’ud sent doctors to attend to him. He sought treatment in Lebanon but eventually passed away in 1957.

Masjid Abdel Rahman al Saadi echoes with Al-Sa’di’s legacy. Qassim University hosted a conference in 2019 to honor his influence. The conference highlighted his contributions to religious knowledge.
