Time to picture Spandau’s revitalization. We are standing at the Maselakekanal. This canal’s story is one of transformation. It shows Berlin’s ability to reinvent itself.

The Maselakekanal itself lies almost a kilometer north of the Maselakebucht. The Maselakebucht is located in the Havel. The canal’s construction dates back to around 1903. You might hear two names for the bridge crossing it. Some call it Boca-Raton-Steg. Others know it as Maselakekanalsteg.

Once, this entire area was part of a large field called Maselake. But the late 19th century brought factories. By 1901, only the southern part of Maselake remained on maps. Soon, it all became industrial.

But look around you. The area is changing. The Maselakekanal area is part of an extensive urban revitalization project. This project aims to reconnect the former industrial canal with the city.

Notice the waterfront promenade. It merges the city with the Maselakekanal. A stepped lawn manages stormwater. Terraced seating invites you to sit by the water. Water plants and a weeping willow add a touch of nature.

The revitalization includes a temporary activity zone. It is located on a former industrial brownfield. It features an asphalt surface. A yellow, oscillating linear pattern enlivens the space. Yellow and black dividers reference the site’s industrial past.

For those who love canoeing, a public boat slip is incorporated into the terrace’s steps. This thoughtful design encourages water activities. The Maselakekanal area is becoming a vibrant space. It combines history with modern recreation.

The area between the Maselakebucht and the Nordhafen Spandau is now the Maselakepark. The street beside it is called Am Maselakepark. The area in between is referred to as the Maselake-Halbinsel. It was an industrial area in the 20th century. Today it is a residential area, called Quartier Maselake Nord and Quartier Maselake Sued.

Even now, plans are underway for further development. A primary school, Maselake-Nord, is planned near the Maselakekanal’s northern end. The competition for its design started in 2001.

The Maselakekanal area is a testament to Berlin’s dynamic spirit. It blends industrial history with modern living. It offers green spaces and recreational opportunities. The Maselakekanal stands as a symbol of renewal.
