Could a simple house hold the soul of an entire industry? Here before us stands the Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch, a seemingly unassuming structure that whispers tales of Witten’s coal-mining past. The Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule. Built in the 1850s from the ubiquitous Ruhr sandstone, it served as the beating heart of the Zeche Wallfisch colliery. The name “Wallfisch”, meaning “whale”, possibly derived from the constellation Cetus. This Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch is the oldest preserved surface building of its kind in the entire Ruhr region. Look closely at the walls. Those bricked-up arched doorways and the vertical slots are scars, remnants of a time when ropes and machinery pulsed with life, hauling coal from the depths of the earth. The Zeche Wallfisch colliery, formed in 1832, saw the rise and fall of Witten’s coal industry. The construction of the Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch coincided with the sinking of the Theodor shaft in the 1850s. This marked the colliery’s transition to deep mining, a pivotal moment in its history. Over the years, the colliery expanded, adding more shafts for ventilation and drainage. By 1893, six shafts were in operation, a testament to the growing demand for coal. However, the story of Zeche Wallfisch, like many others in the Ruhr region, is one of booms and busts. By 1894, the coal seams began to deplete, leading to mergers with other collieries. In 1898, the Zeche Wallfisch ceased operations. Its legacy, however, lived on in the sturdy Maschinenhaus. Repurposed as a residence in 1980, the Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch has stood the test of time. Listed as a historical monument in 1983, it became part of the Industrial Heritage Trail in 2013. The Maschinenhaus der Zeche Wallfisch stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. It echoes with the stories of the miners who toiled within its shadow, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the machines. It is a living testament to the industrial heritage that shaped Witten and the Ruhr region.
