“Remember Marylawn of the Oranges High School? This all-girls Catholic school shaped young women for nearly eight decades. Since 1935, Marylawn provided education in South Orange. It was a place where the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth inspired students.

Marylawn stood for more than just academics. Its mission was to prepare young women morally. It aimed to challenge them intellectually. The goal was to help them find their place in society. This mission followed Catholic tradition. It also honored the spirit of the Sisters of Charity.

Marylawn of the Oranges Academy offered a personalized touch. It created a Christ-centered environment. Here, students strengthened their spiritual foundations. They also built their academic skills. Marylawn fostered moral growth too.

For ten years before closing, Marylawn boasted impressive stats. It had a 100% graduation rate. Even better, 100% of graduates gained college acceptance.

In 2009-2010, the school enrolled 160 students. With 21.9 teachers, the student-teacher ratio was roughly 7 to 1.

Sports were also important. The Marylawn of the Oranges High School Lady Knights competed. They participated in the Super Essex Conference. This conference included both public and private schools. These schools came from Essex County. In 1985, the tennis team achieved glory. They won the Non-Public B state championship.

Sadly, Marylawn announced its closure in October 2012. June 2013 marked the final graduation.

One notable alumna is Karen Hunter. She graduated from Marylawn of the Oranges Academy in 1983. Hunter is a journalist, publisher, and talk show host. She is also a co-author.

Since March 2018, the former Marylawn site hosts a new venture. It is now the STEM Innovation Academy. This academy involves Montclair State University. It also partners with the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Orange Board of Education is a partner too.

Marylawn of the Oranges High School created leaders. Its graduates stepped into society ready to make a difference. They carried the wisdom and grace instilled by the Sisters of Charity. They also held the solid Catholic traditions they learned. Though closed, Marylawn’s legacy endures in the lives it touched.”
