How did this bustling district get its name? We are standing in Maryino, one of the most populous districts in all of Moscow. Maryino has a fascinating history, stretching back to the 12th century. The district’s namesake is the village of Maryino. It was located where Pererva and Podolskaya streets intersect today. There are multiple theories about where the name Maryino originates from. One compelling theory suggests that the village was named after Maria Yaroslavna. She was the mother of Tsar Ivan III, who established the village. The first settlers arrived in the area around the 12th century. Remnants of their presence, such as Vyatichi Slavic burial mounds and settlement ruins, still whisper tales of their existence. Imagine, long ago, this area was a tapestry of rural life. Then, a dramatic shift took place in the late 19th century. The Chaginsky swamp, once a defining feature of the landscape, was transformed into the Lyublino Aeration Fields, a massive wastewater treatment plant. This marvel of engineering, completed in 1898, covered over one thousand hectares. It even earned Moscow a Golden Prize in Brussels in 1911 for its innovative sanitation system. As the 20th century progressed, Moscow’s boundaries expanded. Maryino transitioned from a village on the outskirts to a fully integrated district within the city. The construction of two metro stations in 1996 further cemented Maryino’s place in the fabric of Moscow. From a humble village to a thriving district, Maryino’s story is a microcosm of Moscow’s own evolution, a testament to the constant dance between the past and the present.
