“What’s the story behind this unassuming building?” I ask gesturing towards the Maryhill Gospel Hall. This local church has a history stretching back over a century. The Maryhill Gospel Hall wasn’t always at this location.

In 1902 a group of Christians started meeting in Wilton Street. They established an independent local church based on New Testament principles. They called their building Hebron Hall. Hebron is a biblical place associated with the worship of God. This was a poignant reminder during turbulent times. World wars and social depression tested their faith. They believed that only the Lord Jesus Christ stayed the same.

In March 1958 another Christian Church joined them. This church met in Eastpark Gospel Hall on Avenuepark Street. Years later the Wilton Street building needed repairs. The solution was to renovate the Avenuepark Street building completely. After seven months of hard work the renovated building opened in October 1961.

The Avenuepark Street building eventually required serious structural attention too. It was completely demolished and a brand new building was erected. It opened in 2002. This was 100 years after the Christians first met in Wilton Street. During construction the church met in the local community centre on Sundays. They used a local primary school for midweek meetings. This reminded them that the Church is people not bricks.

Today the Church meets in the Maryhill Gospel Hall. They are a company of Christians gathering together. This is how they find it in the New Testament. They come from different countries and backgrounds. They have different jobs and abilities. Some are young and some are old. They share a common belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. They desire to show this by living out His words.

The Maryhill Gospel Hall stands as a testament to enduring faith. It shows a commitment to community and a belief in something bigger than themselves. Their story reflects resilience and unity. The Maryhill Gospel Hall continues to be a spiritual home for many. It is a place where faith is not just spoken but lived.
