MGR’s film career was closely linked to his political ambitions. He joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam DMK party. He used his fame to build a strong political base. In 1972 MGR formed his own party the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam AIADMK.

Five years later MGR led the AIADMK to victory. He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was the first film actor to achieve this position in India. MGR remained Chief Minister until his death in 1987. His government was known for its welfare programs and its focus on social justice.

MGR’s health declined in his later years. He was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1984. Despite his illness he continued to serve as Chief Minister. MGR died on December 24 1987. His death caused widespread grief and chaos throughout Tamil Nadu.

MGR’s legacy lives on. He is remembered as a charismatic leader who dedicated his life to serving the people of Tamil Nadu. He received the Bharat Ratna. This is India’s highest civilian honor in 1988. He was awarded posthumously.
