How long has Martin’s Gate stood guard? Martin’s Gate in Freiburg im Breisgau is more than just a gate. It’s a living testament to the city’s resilience. It began as a simple fortification in 1202. This is documented in 1238 as Porta Sancti Martini the Latin Gate of Saint Martin. Over the centuries Martin’s Gate served as a prison. They said of its inmates that they wore the Cloak of Martin. Imagine the stories those walls could tell.

The gate saw changes. The 17th century brought a picture of Martin of Tours to the city side. Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban’s construction and leveling works changed things. The gate’s link to the city was lost. Salzstrasse became the main access road. The picture of Saint Martin was restored many times. Wilhelm Dürr’s 1851 restoration was one of the most notable. It was removed in 1968/69. There is still debate on what image to use. There is a blank space. It commemorates conflicts between the Freiburg Civil Defence and French Revolutionary Forces.

Martin’s Gate underwent a major transformation in 1901. Surrounding buildings surpassed the old gate. The passageway was too small. Demolition was considered. But the city council chose modification. Carl Schäfer led the project. The tower was raised from 22 to 60 meters. A new roof was added. It was styled after 15th-century architecture. A new larger gate was added next to the original. A German Reichsadler was painted on the gate. It featured the emblems of Freiburg and Baden. The painting was removed in 1951. A replica of a baroque sandstone plate was installed. It shows the Double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire.

Martin’s Gate is more than just bricks and mortar. A tablet next to the archway tells of the burning of witches in Freiburg. Marghareta Mössmer Catharina Stadelmann and Anna Wolffart are named. These women were executed in 1599. Inside the western arch from 1901 is a McDonald’s. The Freiburg city council couldn’t stop them from putting up a sign. They did prevent the use of the prominent red and yellow. A more neutral design was allowed. Nearby you find the Freiburger Markthalle the Theater am Martinstor and the Martinsbräu. They are all in Martinsgässle a nearby street.

Martin’s Gate remains a vibrant part of Freiburg. Its history echoes in its stones. It shows the growth and change of the city. It stands as a symbol of Freiburg’s rich past. It is a reminder of its resilience. It is a gateway to the past. A McDonald’s is next to it showing its present. This is Martin’s Gate.
