Imagine a church bell silenced not by time, but by progress. Here before us stands the Martin-Luther-Kirche in Freiburg. It is a testament to faith, resilience, and now, transformation.

Once a vibrant house of worship, the Martin-Luther-Kirche now stands on the cusp of a new chapter. Its story began in the early 20th century. The Stühlinger district was growing. The Protestant population surged. By 1910, nearly 4800 believers needed a church.

An architectural competition in 1911 sought to create this sacred space. Schuster and Christen won. Hans Christen designed a beautiful structure. It blended classicism and Art Nouveau. Otto Winterer inaugurated it. Construction started in 1913. World War I slowed progress. Finally, the Martin-Luther-Kirche opened on March 23, 1919.

The original Martin-Luther-Kirche made a striking impression. Its design incorporated elements borrowed from antiquity. A large hipped roof and a towering steeple defined its silhouette. The main facade featured high rectangular windows above the portals. Inside, stamped shell limestone created a unique ambiance.

Tragedy struck during World War II. A bombing raid on November 27, 1944, destroyed the Martin-Luther-Kirche. The pastor tragically lost his wife and children. The tower collapsed onto the parsonage.

After the war, a temporary church served the community from 1946. Architect Max Schmechel designed a replacement. It was inaugurated in 1953. The new Martin-Luther-Kirche was simpler. It was a white plastered hall with a plain gabled roof. It could accommodate around 800 people. The new building was less prominent than the first. Some thought it resembled two other Freiburg churches.

The new Martin-Luther-Kirche retained a few features of the original. It had a raised location and a semi-circular forecourt. A wide staircase led to the entrance. The square tower, topped with a gabled roof, stood at the northwest corner.

Inside, the post-war Martin-Luther-Kirche maintained a simple aesthetic. High rectangular windows illuminated the space. The altar space was separated by an arch.

The Martin-Luther-Kirche bells told their own story. The original steel bells were cast in 1923. Only one survived the bombing. Three new bells were added in 1967.

However, times changed. Church attendance declined. In 2016, the Lutherkirche parish merged with the Kreuzkirche parish. The final service was held on January 31, 2016. The church was deconsecrated.

Now, the University Hospital is repurposing the building. The Martin-Luther-Kirche will become a learning center for medical students. Construction began in April 2024. It is scheduled to finish by the end of 2026.

The transformation involves gutting the interior. It also includes the construction of a phantom hall in the basement for the dental clinic. During the construction, the clock and bells will be out of service.

The Martin-Luther-Kirche stands as a powerful symbol of Freiburg’s past. It is also a symbol of its future. It adapts and evolves to meet the needs of a changing world. It is a place of learning and growth.
