The Martin House’s story began in the early 1900s. Darwin D. Martin, a Buffalo executive, commissioned Wright to design a home for his family. Martin was a leading executive at the Larkin Company. He also engaged Wright to design the company’s new headquarters.
Built between 1903 and 1905, the Martin House is more than just a house. It is a comprehensive residential estate. Wright designed it as an integrated composition. It connects buildings and landscape. The estate originally included the main house. There was also a secondary house. A gardener’s cottage completed the ensemble. A pergola connected the main house to a conservatory. A carriage house-stable also stood on the property.
Wright deemed the Martin House complex “a well-nigh perfect composition.” He kept the site plan near his drawing board for decades. The Martin House stands out for its size and open plan. Wright characterized it as a “domestic symphony”. Its design was based on Wright’s “Home in a Prairie Town”. This design appeared in the Ladies Home Journal in 1901. The Martin House features open spaces and horizontal lines. Natural materials dominate the palette. Dramatic cantilevers define the structure. All these elements exemplify the Prairie style.
The Martin House boasts nearly 400 art glass windows. These windows act as light screens. They visually connect the interior with the exterior. The Martin House features more art glass patterns than any other of Wright’s Prairie houses.
Over time, the Martin House suffered decline. The family abandoned it. Parts were demolished. Neglect took its toll. But in 1992, a community-led restoration began. The goal was to save this treasure. The ambitious project was completed in 2019.
Today, the Martin House stands as a symbol of civic identity. It represents cultural pride. It is a National Historic Landmark. It serves as a premier heritage destination in New York State.
