“A haven for maids once stood here” The Marthashof. That’s what this place was called long ago. It began in 1854. The Kaiserswerther Diakonie established a shelter and educational center for young maids. The name Martha itself is Hebrew. It means “mistress”. In the New Testament Martha managed a household in Bethany.
The Marthashof’s story continues. World War II destroyed the original buildings. After the war East Germany took over. Robotron a company built barracks for its 100 employees. The land later served as a storage area for coal fruit and vegetables.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks took control of the Marthashof. In 2006 Stofanel Investment GmbH bought the property. They planned family-friendly housing with lots of green space. The architects Gruentuch Ernst won the design competition. Their plan included 129 housing units.
The Marthashof is now a residential complex. It covers 12.380 square meters. Seven-story buildings form the corners. Five and six-story buildings fill in the middle. The buildings surround a public park. The park opens onto Schwedter Strasse. Construction started in 2008. The first residents moved in during 2010. By 2013 all units were sold.
The Marthashof project was controversial. The S.T.E.R.N. GmbH supported the new construction. However a local residents’ group criticized the project. They worried about gentrification and the shadows cast on neighboring buildings. The Marthashof became a symbol of the debate about urban development in Berlin. Newspapers and radio programs discussed the project internationally.
Today the Marthashof stands as a testament to change. It shows how a site can be transformed from a modest shelter to a modern residential area.
