“Dedicated to a park ranger.” That’s the inscription that greets you as we approach Martha Harville Memorial Oak Grove. This serene spot is more than just a collection of trees. It is a tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to preserving and protecting the natural beauty around us.
Martha Harville’s promising career was tragically cut short by melanoma in 1988. But her memory lives on in this peaceful grove. It provides a space for rest and reflection within the Goodan Ranch Sycamore Canyon Preserve.
The 3.6-mile loop at Martha’s Grove Trail is a popular hike. It explores Poway’s ranching history. It also pays homage to Martha.
As you wander through Martha Harville Memorial Oak Grove, take a moment to appreciate the scenery. Some of the oaks are survivors of the Cedar Fire in 2003. Unfortunately, many of the coast live oaks in this area have been killed by the golden spotted oak borer.
Despite the challenges, the grove remains a green oasis. Willows provide abundant shade along the trail here. You might even hear the faint trickle of a stream in wetter years. Wild roses add splashes of color. Red-spotted toads hop across the trail.
Nearby, you can see morteros. Native people once used these to grind acorns into flour.
The trail to Martha Harville Memorial Oak Grove offers an expansive view of the Goodan Ranch. The first section is predominated by coastal sage scrub. The sounds of birds fill the air. California quail are common here, along with wrentits, California thrashers, and California towhees.
In a wet year, wildflowers abound. Yellow and white pincushions dot the landscape. Copperleaf adds a touch of desert beauty. Sun cups, phacelia, and snapdragons create a colorful display.
The trail becomes more variable with short rises and drops. The view switches to wide open hillsides. This section is comprised of tall steps and decomposed granite. It can be quite slippery on slopes when it is dry.
Deer weed, black sage, laurel sumac, and golden yarrow thrive here. Checkerbloom and chaparral yucca add to the diverse vegetation.
As you leave the grove, the vegetation thins out. Monkeyflowers, mariposa lilies, and canchalagua still greet you.

The Goodan Ranch Sycamore Canyon Preserve is managed jointly by the County of San Diego and the cities of Poway and Santee. It lies just west of Highway 67. The preserve contains a wide variety of scenery and habitat.
