Is this a testament to a life cut short or a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk even in the most idyllic settings? This, my friends, is the Berger-Marterl. It stands as a silent sentinel to a tragic tale. This unassuming memorial marks the spot where Andreas Berger, a young gymnast, met his untimely end in 1926. The inscription tells only part of the story. Imagine the horror: Berger, lured on a pub crawl by those he considered friends, was led here under false pretenses. They intended to kill him, and this scenic location became the backdrop for their heinous act. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Unbeknownst to the perpetrators, two brothers, Franz and Martin Wiener, were working nearby. They heard Berger’s cries for help and rushed to his aid. They hid the injured man and saw that he was transported to the hospital in Mondsee. Sadly, despite their efforts, Andreas Berger succumbed to his injuries. The Berger-Marterl, erected by his fellow gymnasts, serves as a poignant reminder that evil can wear a familiar face and that life can be cruelly cut short. Let us remember Andreas Berger and the Wiener brothers, whose courage in the face of tragedy shines a light in this somber place.
