Marston United Reformed Church’s story began long ago. The congregation originated from Cowley Road Congregational Church. Driven by the initiative of its people, the church sought its own space to worship. In 1939, this building was erected and became its new home.
With the move came a new leader. Miss Irene Smith was appointed as a deaconess. She was to lead the church’s important work. Since then, many ministers have guided this congregation. Many had connections to Mansfield College.
In 1972, something significant happened. The United Reformed Church formed. It was an historic merger. Congregational and English Presbyterian Churches united. Marston Congregational Church then became Marston United Reformed Church. It continues to thrive.
Rosamund Bailey has attended Marston United Reformed Church since childhood. She remembers Sunday School outings. Wicksteed Park in Kettering was a favorite. She recalls picnics and rounders games in South Park. Rosamund and her husband Bob married here. Their children were baptised here too. For her, Marston United Reformed Church is home. It is a place for tough times and good times.
Marston United Reformed Church isn’t just a place for its members. Oxford Lutheran Mission holds services here. They typically occur on the second, third, and fourth Sundays of the month.
The church building also serves another purpose. Rivers of Life holds meetings here too. These take place on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings. It’s a busy and vibrant space.
Today, Marston United Reformed Church remains a vital part of Marston. Reverend Cara Heafey describes the congregation as small but friendly. They work with other Marston churches. Together, they support the local community. Marston United Reformed Church is more than a building. It is a community hub. It is a place of faith. It’s a welcoming space for all.
