Marry Grotto, also known as Mount Mary’s Basilica, is steeped in history and faith. The tale goes back to the 16th century when Jesuit priests brought a statue of the Virgin Mary to this scenic hill overlooking the Arabian Sea. They built a humble chapel around it, a beacon of devotion. Now, imagine the audacity! Around 1700, pirates, those scoundrels, stormed the chapel, seeking gold. Not finding their desired treasure, they vented their frustration on the statue, chopping off its right hand. The statue was later repaired, a testament to the enduring faith it inspired. It’s said a local fisherman then dreamt of the statue, floating in the sea. Lo and behold, the statue was found, just as in the dream! It’s a tale whispered through generations, adding to the mystique of Marry Grotto. Though the original statue is now kept safe, a replica stands in its place, continuing to draw devotees seeking blessings and solace.
