A colossal structure dominates the landscape. This is Marly Brussels’s newest bus depot. It’s not just a place to park buses. It’s a testament to innovative urban planning. Marly stands as a symbol of Brussels’s commitment to efficient public transport.
Marly wasn’t always a bus depot. This site once housed a coke factory. That’s right. A coke factory. The Marly name remains a nod to that industrial past. Now it’s a modern marvel of engineering. The depot’s strategic location in Neder-Over-Heembeek optimizes bus routes. This reduces unnecessary travel and improves efficiency throughout the city’s northern region.
The construction of Marly involved a two-phase approach. The first phase created a smaller depot. This included an open-air parking area and a technical space. Phase one was completed in August 2019. Phase two which concluded in 2024 expanded the depot’s capacity dramatically. The facility now accommodates 190 buses 550 drivers and 110 technicians. Marly’s main building is massive. It measures 190 meters by 70 meters. It rises 20 meters above ground level. It includes two underground and three above-ground levels.
Marly isn’t just bigger. It’s smarter too. The depot utilizes a unique bus parking system. Buses are parked in straight lines like trams. This maximizes space and improves operational efficiency. A technician handles parking maintenance and positioning of each bus upon arrival. This contrasts with the traditional system where drivers parked the vehicles.
The depot isn’t just about logistics. It reflects the city’s broader commitment to sustainability. Marly is designed to eventually house a completely electric bus fleet. This makes it a pioneer for the MIVB a significant step towards Brussels’s green transportation goals. Marly is more than just a bus depot. It’s a symbol of the future of urban transit in Brussels. It embodies progress efficiency and a sustainable vision for the city. The next time you ride a bus in northern Brussels remember Marly. Remember the history the innovation and the ambition represented by this remarkable facility.
