Why would a king, even ironically, name a garden after a lavish French palace, especially when it’s just for vegetables? Welcome to Marly Garden, my friends, where Prussian practicality once met a touch of royal humor. This tranquil space, nestled within the larger Sanssouci Park, wasn’t always a haven for quiet contemplation. It began its life in 1715, under the reign of the “Soldier King,” Frederick William I, as a simple kitchen garden. This frugal king, in a playful jab at his father’s extravagance, dubbed the area “mein Marly,” a humorous nod to the opulent Palace of Marly-le-Roi built by the French King Louis XIV. Imagine rows of cabbages and beans where now sweeping lawns and romantic sculptures stand! Frederick William I, a man of strict routine, would visit Marly Garden daily with his family, enjoying simple pleasures like preparing salads from his own harvest. Can you picture the king, in his military attire, surveying his vegetables with the same meticulousness he applied to his army? But the Marly Garden’s destiny shifted with the changing tides of kings. When Frederick the Great, known for his love of philosophy and the arts, came to power, the simple pleasure house within the garden was demolished. In its place, he envisioned unobstructed views of his beloved Sanssouci Palace, a symbol of his own enlightened reign. Years later, under King Frederick William IV, the garden underwent a dramatic transformation. The construction of the Friedenskirche, or Church of Peace, on the eastern edge of Marly Garden prompted a redesign. Gone were the regimented rows of vegetables, replaced by the sweeping vistas and artful plantings of a Romantic landscape. As you stroll through Marly Garden today, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet. It’s a place where the pragmatic spirit of a soldier king met the artistic vision of his descendants, creating a landscape that’s both grand and intimate, a testament to the ever-changing tapestry of time.
