Thirty-five meters high it stands. A beacon. The Markuskreuz. Atop the concrete bell tower of the Markus Church in Essen-Frohnhausen.

The Markuskreuz isn’t just a cross. It’s a symbol. A testament to the resilience of a community. A community that faced immense challenges. The First World War devastated Frohnhausen. Many men perished at the front. Their wives and children often worked in the Krupp steelworks. Producing weapons. The post-war years brought hardship. Hunger and disease claimed more lives. Plans for a new church were delayed. The construction of the Markus Church finally began in 1961.

The Markuskreuz was added later. It crowns the bell tower. A twelve-meter-high copper-clad steel structure. It silently observes the lives unfolding below. The church is a striking example of 1960s architecture. A square building covered by a copper-clad tent roof. Inside. The roof is lined with wood. Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The three bells in the tower were cast by the Bochumer Verein. Each bell bears a biblical inscription. A constant reminder of faith and hope. The church is more than just a place of worship. The Markus-Gemeindezentrum is a hub. It houses a community center. A kindergarten. A youth center. And senior housing.

Life in Frohnhausen was centered around the church. Young people would have their Bible study sessions. Sing songs. Participate in sports. Crafts were also done in the youth center. Its dimensions were 13 by 21 meters. It even had a bicycle cellar. The kindergarten has expanded. Transforming into a full-day childcare facility. Now a certified family center. Offering comprehensive services.

Sadly. The Markus Church faces an uncertain future. In 2019. Plans were announced for its closure. Due to declining membership and financial issues. The community fought back. Protest letters were written. A human chain formed in front of the church. They fought to preserve their history. Their faith. Their community center. The Markuskreuz remains a symbol of that fight. A symbol of hope.

Look up at the Markuskreuz. See it? Let its presence remind you of the enduring power of community. Of faith. Of the stories etched into its very metal. The stories of Frohnhausen. The stories of the Markus Church. The stories of the Markuskreuz.
