Imagine a time when ships needed a lift not a dock. That’s the story of the Marine Railway. It is a fascinating piece of maritime history. Today we’re standing before a unique structure. This Marine Railway offered a practical solution for ship repairs.
The Marine Railway is essentially an inclined plane. It extends from the shoreline into the water. Think of it as a ramp for boats. A special cradle was submerged. Ships were floated onto this cradle. A mechanism then hauled the ship and cradle out of the water and onto the slip.
Thomas Morton invented the marine railway in 1818. He was a shipwright from Scotland. His invention provided a cheaper alternative to dry docks. Dry docking a ship was an expensive and time-consuming process. Morton’s marine railway streamlined hull maintenance, especially below the waterline. Larger marine railways can handle massive vessels. Some could lift ships weighing thousands of tons.
Morton sought to extend his patent in 1832. He appeared before a House of Commons committee. He argued that the slow pace of construction justified an extension. He also pointed out the cost savings. The marine railway cost one-tenth of a dry dock. It also allowed for easier maintenance on land. The committee sympathized with Morton. However it ultimately denied his request.
Using a marine railway was straightforward. First the cradle was lowered into the water. The vessel was carefully positioned over it. Ropes secured the ship to the cradle. This prevented any movement. Large marine railways could handle ships of 6000 tons.
Hoisting the cradle began once the vessel was secure. Engineers ensured the ship sat correctly. They checked for any potential damage. Larger vessels might be temporarily welded to the cradle by divers. Once satisfied the vessel was hoisted. It moved to the top of the slipway. This point was usually beyond the high tide mark.
Originally manpower or horses powered the process. Block and tackle provided mechanical advantage. Steam engines later replaced this. They offered more efficient power. Modern railways use electric or electro-hydraulic winches.
Why use a Marine Railway? Cleaning and painting hulls was a common reason. Applying anti-fouling protection was also important. Repairs below the waterline were easier. Replacing propellers became simpler. Insurance inspections could be performed efficiently. Cathodic protection could be fitted. The Marine Railway eliminated the need to pump out a dry dock. This saved both time and money.
Marine railways have even served as substitutes for waterway locks. This is useful where terrain is unsuitable for traditional locks. One working example is the Big Chute Marine Railway in Ontario, Canada.
One of the earliest surviving marine railways is the Creque Marine Railway. It sits on Hassel Island in the Caribbean. The Evans Bay Patent Slip in Wellington Harbour New Zealand operated from 1873 to 1980. It is now a heritage area.
